The creation, development and delivery of arenas, conference centres and theatres can be extremely complex. Whether that be conceptualising a new build to meet complex client requirements, or the challenge of refurbishing or upgrading a venue whilst activity and live events continue to take place.

At their core, construction projects are inherently challenging, however there are numerous other factors that need to be considered. Venues need to be efficient for operation; agile enough to flex for multiple uses; capitalise on their available spend per head and; present an attractive setting which maximises their utilisation. At the outset of a project, it is therefore critical to consider key components toward market and geographical placement, future business operation and commercial growth opportunities and the efficiencies needed to rapidly turnaround events and their servicing requirements. These elements need to be applied toward all touch points, providing an enhanced experience not just for the customer, but for the artist, production and operational teams, collectively.

Existing venues that explore opportunity for refurbishment cannot afford to simply close the doors while the works take place. They must sustain a programme of live events, generating revenues and maintain business continuity. Managing the two in parallel provides natural tension and requires significant planning, phasing and a considerable depth of operational knowledge to ensure success.

understanding operations
Built on the numerous years of working directly within a venue environment, we understand what makes a venue work, and conversely, what doesn’t. While clearly those working within industry have a wealth of experience, we offer a refreshing dynamic of transposing our knowledge from the infancy of the project, providing clarity, direction, advanced cost certainty and the avoidance of unnecessary abortive work.
event management coordination
Event management and planning within a venue is an ever shifting nuance that naturally presents complexity against construction delivery. Furthermore, outside of programme challenges, the parameters of the event also often change. Having an understanding of the process from pencilling an event, through managing expectation, production load in, sound checks, performance and load out is crucial to obtaining synergy with construction. As are the relationships developed with the events team to minimise disruption.
appreciating the live environment
Construction, no matter the scale, needs to be placed secondary to 'business as usual' operations. The two often conflict, although this baseline mentality is paramount and one that is endemic throughout the novus team. The live environment is a considerably complex animal and requires a wide range of factors that need focus. Construction, while secondary, needs to be balanced to maintain momentum, albeit fused with operational requirements and more importantly safety, both pre, during and post event. Striking the equilibrium between each is what we know best.
agility & flexibility
Curve balls, diversions or complete U-turns are commonplace in this industry. Novus enter into schemes with this at the forefront of our minds. We are well versed at dealing with these circumstances, in a level headed manner, with the knowledge of knowing what to do, at pace, and with minimal disruption. Our business is built on agility and we love a challenge.
phasing & planning
The core to the success of a project stems from the detail and understanding of project planning. It is an artform that many do not possess to baseline a solid and efficient phasing strategy with the events programme and furthermore, manage and control the characteristic inevitable shift and flex. Fortunately, novus possess this in abundance. Through the application of our construction planning specialism we can develop a highly detailed multi-phase strategy that will in turn aid all stakeholders to fully understand the status around every event during the delivery period and also advance cost certainty.
commercial understanding
The lifespan and purpose of a venue exceeds far past practical completion of a project. While its purpose is to provide experiences for all those who perform or attend, it is a business and one that seeks to capitalise on spend per head. Novus understand the importance of this key fact and the dynamics surrounding how it is achieved. Aspects such as the provisions to enhance dwell time, crowd flow modelling, layered hospitality offerings and technology.
